I started sewing last year, for a combination of the following reasons
1, tired of never being able to afford things in the shops
2, dislike of being dicated to by fashion
3, fit
4, cause people told me i'd hate it.
As part of this I subscribed to some blogs, in particular coletterie, who did a multi entry piece on
wardrobe architectureWhich covered a lot of things, some of which (makeup and accesories) I ignored, most of them I read at least once.
Basically it was about picking shapes, colours and a style that meant when you invested in making something for your wardrobe, you wore it. Its a good set of exercises. I am hesitant on colours, everything went black for awhile, and blue hair clashes with red a colour that suits me. So the advice on
colour palatte was helpful, to refocus on neutrals and accents.
As a result of reading this, I came across
Project 333, where you have 4 seasonal wardrobes of 30 pieces each. Its supposed to include footwear, jewellery etc, but I drew the line at that. The big winter boots can be replaced by shoes and sandals in the summer, but I reckon living in scotland I can get away with a pair of red, blue/green, black, other ankle boots for the whole year.
So I spent my evening going through my wardrobe, replacing summer with autmn and looking for what I needed.
Which is mainly replacing items with things I'll wear and in the right colour, also summer tops and autmun skirts.
Currently I have my 30 items split
5 Trousers
5 T-shirts/tops
5 Overtops/Jackets - ie jumpers, cardigans, hoodies
5 Skirts
5 Dresses
Already this will be edited as 3 dresses, 3 skirts in any given season is enough, so I guess that covers the boots!
I have some items that are staples, and don't count in the total, such as 3 long sleeve t's (black/navy/gray), 3 short sleeved t's, knit miniskirts, vests, light jumpers.
I have a way to go with it, but so far its helping keep my limited wardrobe space, functional rather than full
I also have - slob at home stuff, work out stuff, motorbike gear and whitby stuff. These are not included in the 30 items, I'm not insane. Though the more I do this, the more splitting my stuff into 3 month cycles seems a good idea, keeps things fresh, means you dont reach for the same things day after day.
Overall its been helpful, I know i'm not going to get randomly distracted by. every. new. sewing pattern, just some of them and I have a good idea what colours to make them in. Just as well i'm probably not working in October!
