played mage
fine on the I kick here, elbow here do stuff bit
than I said
'okay how do I do the magic bit'
and then I realised I was going to have to make long rambling posts on explaining art history concepts
to a tall, ott, long haired, smoking geek who writes and is quite happy constructing the world as a scicomp fantasy paradim
and uses philosophy concepts as nouns
this could take awhile.
on the plus side if I ever need to tutor someone in art history
I'll have most of the leg work done
but then he has to explain how the magic in roleplaying works
when theres no spell list
rather fuzzy sphere concepts
the player has very little gaming experience
and just changed how her concept works from when she thought about it on sunday
and usually gets through by being the only girl or the girlfriend of one of the palyers
ummmm, muffins anyone

In Mage the spheres are bodies of knowledge rather than specific steps, so you can do pretty much anything you like as a specific magical action that is within your range of knowledge. As it is possible to accomplish the same goal via several means, there is cross-over between the spheres.
For starting players I'd generally say a good approach is start with what your props/foci are, from tthat you can do pretty much anything you can explain in terms of using your foci.
If you like, as someone who has had their web-writings for Mage translated into three or four languages, if you want to let me know what your tradition (if any) and spheres & foci are, I could come up with specific examples.
