Jun. 10th, 2004 12:02 pmit’s Prince Phillips birthday today, he got about 45 seconds of some pomp and ceremony marching brass band on the radio today (go the BBC). Prince Phillip is one member of the royal family i’ve always related to, cause like he spends a fair amount of time with his foot in his mouth. I think the guy is totally underrate actually. Because
1/ he was quite happy to become a prince consort and didn’t demand the kingship and use british resources to invade Greece. Okay the chances of this happening are pretty slim I know, but it can’t be an easy role. It’s effectively less useful than Charles, at least he has the chance of promotion. All thats going to happen to Phillip is demotion.
2/ they keep going on about the ‘human’ face of the royal family, and before Di they had the gaffe’s of Prince Phillip. Like a big brother contestant before his time. Every move and word monitored by the press, and every slip which most of us would make is reported to the audience, so we can all feel smug.
3/ Duty and Marriage. An often overlooked element in marriage and royalty I feel. It is rumoured that both phillip and the queen have had affairs and not been very happy about married life. But unlike Charles and Di, the loss of romance was not a good enough reason to leave. Marriage is a tough job sometimes and it’s nice to see that two people can have enough of a sense of duty to stick it out for the sake of something larger than personal happiness. But then they are an older generation and the values (espically turning a blind eye) are a different. They seem reasonably happy in their old age, and I think they’d be devestated to lose each other.
4/ He never approved of Di, and in the long run I feel got proved right. She did good and bad for the royals in equal measure I think. They wouldn’t be where they are today with out her. But they don’t always look that comfortable about where they are. I think Phillip always felt she never really had the right stuff, Di was not expecting a royal marriage she was expecting a modern marriage. And they are very very different things.
In reality if I ever meet I’d instantly hate him , but I like having him round in the media.
